Infosys BPO, the business process outsourcing arm of software major Infosys Ltd, has opened a new centre in Puerto Rico.

The centre, which would employ nearly 250 persons, has been established by Infosys BPO in association with the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company (PRIDCO).

Infosys BPO has established the centre on a 12,000 sq. ft site in the aviation hub of Aguadilla. While it would deliver in the beginning "order-to-cash’ business processes for the clients in the aviation sector, it would progressively expand to service clients in the federal/ government sector and the healthcare industry, a statement filed with the stock exchanges said. The work force comprises mostly local residents who are US citizens and have rich experience and skills in the aerospace and aviation sectors. The centre would offer services in English and Spanish.

According to Antonio Medina Comas, ED, PRIDCO, the opening of the BPO Centre in Puerto Rico showed how the "industrial development strategy of Puerto Rico" has paved the way for foreign investments. Expressing happiness over the progress of the project, the PRIDCO ED was optimistic that the positive experience would create "additional business opportunities between Puerto Rico and Infosys BPO along with its clients".

Anup Uppadhayay, CEO and MD, Infosys BPO, said the newly opened centre at Aguadilla was a promising regional hub for the company and said the company visualised it as a centre of excellence for aviation and aerospace industry. This also reinforced the company’s resolve to "continue delivering enhanced business value’ to its clients across different industries, including healthcare and the government sector.

He said the availability of talented workforce and a positive business environment fostered by the Puerto Rican government had made it a "favorable destination" for Infosys BPO.

Shares of Infosys are up by Rs 6.25 at Rs 2196.80 on the BSE.
