A Chinese inventor has developed a new type of umbrella which could spell the doom for conventional fabric ones. Called the ‘Air Umbrella’, Chuan Wang, from Nanjing, China, says the device uses the ‘force of air’ that creates an invisible layer to protect users from the elements. The device, which looks like an extra from a Harry Potter set, is powered by a lithium battery with a motor mounted above. This operates a rotating fan mechanism at the top, which draws air in at the bottom of the head, and then expels it from the top at high pressure.
The project was launched on crowd-funding website Kickstarter late September and has so far garnered over $100,000, blowing the initial estimates of $10,000.
