It’s that time of the year when you really, really need a portable wireless speaker. You’re on vacation, and you’re in an all-out party mode – which means that you should be able to get your music blaring anywhere, anytime.

We at Technophile took the new Logitech X300 party-hopping with us, to find out if it is the perfect audio accessory on a budget.

Design and features

When we unboxed the X300, we somehow expected a UE branding somewhere on the speaker – the design is suggestive of that product line. It has neat lines and is very cleverly built. It’s not completely tubular, like the JBL Charge or Pulse, nor is a boxy product, like the Bose SoundLink Mini. Instead, it is designed in such a way that the speakers always face outwards and deliver the sound unhindered. The rubberised coating helps it give a very solid grip on any surface.

What we didn’t like is the fact that there’s no proper battery indicator – we like knowing how much juice is left for each of our devices. There’s a tiny light on the back, but it’s so inconspicuous that it’s useless.

Performance

The compact form factor delivered a room-filling audio output. The best part about this device is that even at the highest levels of volume, there’s no distortion at all. Yes, at certain points it did feel like it was about to crack, but it never did.

The highs are very clean, as we found out while listening to David Garrett’s violin covers and Kirk Hammett’s guitar solos. Even while listening to some old favourites such as A Flock of Seagulls, the treble held its own pretty well.

The bass output is impressive too – listening to Avicii and DJ Tiesto confirmed this. Yes, we admit that the it’s not as good as the Bose SoundLink Mini, but then again the X300 costs a third of the former. As compared to the JBL Charge, the X300 gives a better bass performance over all genres.

Verdict

Logitech promises a battery life of 5 hours, and 5 hours is what we got. The X300 also comes with a microphone, in case you’d like to attend calls – the call quality is good but you have to get really close to the microphone to make sure the caller hears you properly. Overall, we think that the X300 is the best portable Bluetooth speaker than you can buy at this moment – that is if you’re not willing to spend Bose kind of money.
