In-car navigation experts Garmin set in their latest device for us to have a go with. And here is our review after a long term test…er…drive!
The Garmin nüvi 50LM comes with a 5-inch touch screen to make navigation an easy affair. The main screen shows you only two options – ‘Where To?’ and ‘View Map’. The voice guidance assistant ‘Karen’ (with a clear Australian accent) was a tad too loud at times but enunciated directions clearly. You can choose from 15 combinations of languages and accents, including Hindi and Indian English.
Driving modes
The Garmin Nuvi 50 includes a Junction View and Lane View mode. The real-time junction view guides you to the correct lane when you are approaching a turn or an exit, making unfamiliar intersections and exits easy to navigate. The lane info guides you to the proper lane for approaching turns or exits. You can know the correct lane before making an upcoming turn. In the highway mode, the device displays the vehicle’s current location and shows exits that you might be approaching. It also displays highway mileage information. The accurate speed info is a bonus, but map accuracy suffers from the usual limitations caused by poor availability and updation of local traffic info such as new one-ways etc.
The GPS assistant also has a ‘House Search’ mode where you can enter a specific number and it’ll locate and direct you to the address. When it reads out a street name, you can have the device tell you the name in a neutral ‘Indian’ accent.
On purchase of the device, you have access to free map updates for a lifetime so that you always have the most up-to-date maps, points of interest and navigation information accessible on the device. Map updates are available for download up to four times a year with no subscription, update fees or expiry dates. The device comes pre-loaded with City Navigator India and Malsingmaps. Garmin has included the vehicle suction cup mount in the box as well as a vehicle power cable which is the only way to charge the device.
