Super Plastronics gearing for a stronger consumer durables play

Plans to launch Kodak washing machines, Thomson-branded speakers next year

TV manufacturer Super Plastronics Pvt Ltd (SPPL) is gearing up for a stronger consumer durables play in the upcoming year. The company is the exclusive brand licensee for Kodak TVs and Thomson TVs in the country.

Avneet Singh Marwah, Director and CEO, SPPL, said, “We are gearing up to extend brand Kodak to washing machines next year. We were ready to launch Kodak washing machines this year itself but due to various macro-economic factors including fluctuation in customs duties among others, we pushed the plans to launch Kodak washing machines to 2019.”

At the same time, the company is also extending its brand licensing agreement with French brand Thomson to external speakers.

Pact with Thomson

“We will be launching Thomson-branded TV speakers in 2019. With a flood of content available, consumers are now increasingly looking for a surround sound experience. We believe the TV speaker segment has a huge growth potential,” he said.

SPPL expects to close 2018-19 fiscal year with a turnover of ₹500 crore driven by the Kodak and Thomson branded LED TV business.

“We want to become a ₹1,000-crore company in the next 3-4 years. Overall, we want to have a market share of 7-8 per cent in the LED TV segment. “We already have a three per cent market share in this category,” Marwah added.

The company believes that reduction in GST rate from 28 per cent to 18 per cent for LED TVs up to 32- inches will help grow the penetration of the category and provide a boost to the organised players.

The consumer durables-maker is also bullish on the LED TV segment since there are nearly 120 million households who still own CRT TVs in the country and are expected to upgrade to LED TVs.

Bets on LED segment

“In fact under the exchange programme available on Flipkart, we are seeing many consumers exchange their old Thomson CRT TVs for new Thomson LED TVs. This was a huge surprise for us,” Marwah added. With the LED TV segment witnessing huge disruption due to entry of new players besides proliferation of e-commerce platforms, SPPL expects affordable LED TV brands to get a bigger boost in the upcoming year.
