Everyone’s heard of Google Chromecast, but what about Teewe? The reason we haven’t heard much about Teewe is because it is sold mainly through word-of-mouth marketing.
The first version of Teewe, similar to the Chromecast, was launched through a pre-order campaign on Thunderclap well before Chromecast’s launch in India.
The company (a start-up named, funnily enough, MangoMan Consumer Electronics), has now released a new version - Teewe 2 - with improved features.
New and improved The new version is smaller, compared to the earlier version, but still larger than Chromecast.
When we used the first version, we had doubts whether it would fit in the television at all without disturbing or blocking other sockets next to it.
Thankfully, it just about managed to. The smaller Teewe 2 is better designed, and looks more compact and classier than the first version.
It has a better WiFi chipset and comes with a dual core ARM Cortex A9 processor, quad core GPU and 1GB DDR 3 RAM
The Teewe 2 plugs into the HDMI port of the television, and must be connected to a power source (with the supplied adapter), or to a USB port through the data cable (also supplied).
One advantage Chromecast had over Teewe was better WiFi reception. The Teewe 2 has improved WiFi support, but it still falls short.
We had to adjust the router and the television angles to get them to talk to each other. But once connected, even HD videos played without buffering or stutter.
Better pick A big advantage Teewe has over Chromecast is the desktop app that can be used to stream content from the computer. Chromecast does not have its own desktop app, and we have to use third party apps, many of them paid, to stream media from the desktop.
Teewe’s desktop app can be used to organise content, but while adding new content in the desktop folder, the app took a few minutes to refresh and find the new content.
The app also lost connection occasionally, and we had to restart it to revive the connection. Apart from the Android and iPhone apps, Teewe has come with an app for Windows Phones too.
Teewe 2 costs ₹2,399 (which is ₹600 less than Chromecast) but comes with freebies like two months of Eros Now Premium subscription, and offers for Airtel Broadband customers.
For those looking for a media streaming device, Teewe 2 can be considered the first choice, ahead of Chromecast.
Price: ₹2,399
Love: Build, price, better features
Hate: Occasional WiFi hiccups, below par design of desktop app
