Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions (RBEI) has opened a digital acceleration centre for MTU Friedrichshafen.

MTU is the core business of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, a division of industrial equipment maker Rolls-Royce. This development centre will help MTU develop both software and hardware products, which will be connected to the internet, going forward. Jurgen Winterholler, VP, Digital Solutions, MTU told BusinessLine that the objective is to convert ideas into viable products. “This could be using data crunching algorithms that can help with predictive maintenance of say an aircraft engine,” he said.

“The fact that there is a large Indian talent pool is a no-brainer. Additionally, it will help us speed up our industry 4.0 journey,” said Winterholler.

The industry 4.0 push is a part of Rolls-Royce’s organisation transformation journey, through which it can get better insights into its machines and avoid breakdowns, Neil Crocket,Chief Digital Officer, Rolls-Royce had told BusinessLine recently. In line with this, Bosch will set up an exclusive User Experience (UX) for MTU.

Vijay Ratnaparkhe, President and MD, Robert Bosch, pointed out that Bosch’s experience in automotive engineering, amongst other areas as well as its in-house start-up will help MTU come up with new products and retrofit some of the existing Rolls Rolls systems that have been operational for decades.

Last year, Rolls-Royce had signed a five-year deal with TCS to accelerate adoption of newer technologies. These efforts are a part of the British aero-engine maker’s plan to overcome production problems. In October 2018, it said in a statement that it now expected to deliver about 500 large engines, down from about 550 previously, and it was working closely with customers such as Airbus, which uses the Trent 7000 on its new A330neo jet.

“As we move into 2019, we are confident that Trent 7000 production and delivery volumes will increase significantly to meet our customer commitments,” Rolls-Royce said in a statement.
