There is a huge opportunity for camera modules in India as the industry is still in its nascent stage in the country. Supplying of such components would benefit various sectors, including defence, automobile and medical, a top Syska Group official said.

The multi-product distributor and LED bulb maker Syska Group, which is setting up a factory in Noida, is targeting ₹1,800- 2,000 crore turnover in the next three years, Rajesh Uttamchandani, Director, Syska Group, told BusinessLine . Syska Group generates around ₹14,000 crore from all its businesses, he said.

The company has partnered Suyin Optronics of Taiwan and Biometronic of Singapore, and is investing ₹200 crore in this project. While Syska will have 49 per cent stake in the joint venture, Biometronic and Suyin will have 41 per cent and 10 per cent respectively.

The JV will be called Suyin Optronics Pvt Ltd and Syska, which has a vast distribution reach across the country, will take care of the marketing, he said.

“We will be a pioneer in setting up a factory for such items. We will be making core camera module, which can be supplied to other manufacturers such as CCTV cameras, auto industry, Defence (for drones) and many others,” Uttamchandani said.

Declining to name its first customers in India, he said, “We are in talks with many, including top mobile companies, automobile firms and with governments.”

The factory will be started by November and the company will hire around 60 people initially, and reach up to 600 over the next three years, he said.

The factory will have an installed production capacity of 50-lakh pieces a month and an expansion plan to set up the first COB (chip-on-board) plant for image sensors with an installed capacity of one crore pieces a month.

Centre of excellence

A Centre of Excellence will also be set-up to enable indigenous design and development capability which will constitute a collaborative effort with the industry to develop solutions for optical, mechanical and sensor packaging throughputs, he said.

“We will be setting up the Centre of Excellence within this financial year and are looking for a place. It could be any of the States where there are industrial set up related to our products,” Prabhu Sridharan, Managing Director, Biometronic, said.
