Think of a data centre and you imagine a large room full of servers and endless miles of cables snaking overhead — but did you know that the Telecommunications Industry Association in its TIA 942 Data Centre standard stipulates that the building housing the data centre should be at least 0.8 km away from a railroad or major interstate highway to minimise risk of chemical spills? If you want to set up a data centre, you need to know this, and for this you may need certification.

With the growth of cloud computing, data centre design is becoming more important. According to a Microsoft-commissioned study by IDC, cloud computing will generate over 2 million jobs in India by 2015 and some of the jobs may be in the data centre space.

Help aspirants

Certification will definitely help aspirants find the right job, said Mr Ninad Desai, Secretary, BICSI (Building Industry Consulting Service International) India. Quoting a Gartner report which said that the data centre market in India is estimated to reach $609.1 million in 2012 and grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of around 21 per cent to touch $1.3 billion in 2016, he said, “The BICSI DCDC (Data Centre Design Consultant) credential exceeds the minimum requirements of the existing TIA 942 DC standard.” He said that this certification would ensure that certified people will get higher preference when looking for a job.

But not everybody sides with certification. Mr Praveen Bhadada, Engagement Manager, Zinnov, said, “Any certification is for validation of expertise and in that sense it is important because it impacts the perception of the employer. But these tend to be relatively expensive.” And though there is going to be growth in data centres, Mr Shankaran Chettur, Assistant Vice-President - Alliances, Aptech, said that this is more of a niche segment. “Most of our programmes are for a larger audience. As an organisation, we have not looked at this opportunity.”

Specific job roles

Ms Surabhi Mathur-Gandhi, Senior Vice-President with TeamLease, however felt that there was value in certification. “Certifications are focused towards specific job roles. They add value to a professional in understanding the role expectations. Also, from the compliance angle and the perception of an organisation, it is a value addition to have certified professionals.”
