The Sensex and the Nifty, which spent the entire session mired in the red, recouped their losses to end flat on Friday. The BSE Sensex closed the session down 0.02 per cent or 5.83 points at 28,879, while the Nifty clolsed up 0.02 per cent or 2 points at 8,780.

The top gainers were SSLT, SBI, Dr Reddy's, Bharti Airtel, and Infosys. The top losers were HDFC, Hero MotoCorp, Cipla, Hindalco, and HDFC Bank.

The majority of the sectoral indices finished in the green, with real estate (up 0.74 per cent) and metals (0.72 per cent) the top gainers. The other indices that made gains included oil and gas index, up 0.48 per cent, technology (0.48 per cent) and FMCG (0.24 per cent). Among the losers were healthcare (down 0.19 per cent), banking (0.35 per cent), and capital goods (0.31 per cent).

Earlier, the markets opened in the red. The BSE Sensex was down 9.64 points or 0.03 per cent at 28,875.57. The NSE Nifty opened down 9.70 points or 0.11 per cent lower at 8,768.90.

The US markets ended Thursday's session on a firm note, as crude oil rebounded from a sharp decline. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 56.22 points or 0.31 per cent to 17,958.73, the S&P 500 gained 9.29 points, or 0.45 per cent, to 2,091.19 and the Nasdaq Composite added 23.74 points, or 0.48 per cent, to 4,974.57.
