Marking India’s 65th Independence Day, the Indian Consul General in New York, Prabhu Dayal, rang the closing bell at the Nasdaq stock exchange as the billboards at Times Square displayed images of the tricolour.
This was the fourth consecutive year that the Indian Consul General in New York has presided over the closing bell ceremony at Nasdaq on the occasion of Indian Independence Day. The event last evening was attended by Indian community members here.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Dayal said: “Nasdaq has organised this event to celebrate India’s Independence Day which indicated the ever-growing relationship between Nasdaq and India. Nasdaq’s gesture is in recognition of the fact that India has become a global powerhouse.”
Indian companies like Infosys, Cognizant, Rediff and Sify are members of the Nasdaq 100 index which is one of the most prestigious and widely followed indices of the world, he said.
Mr Dayal expressed confidence that Nasdaq would continue to focus on the interest of investors on the opportunities provided by India and “play a positive role in the growth of the Indian economy’’.
Later in the evening, he also hosted a reception for the members of the Indian community here at the Consulate General.
