The Dharwad-headquartered Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB) has covered 6 lakh people under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and nearly 13 lakh people under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) in nine districts of Karnataka under its jurisdiction.

Extending insurance benefits of ₹2 lakh each under PMJJBY to six victims from Ghalagi Hulakoppa village of Kalaghatagi taluk in Dharwad on Saturday, P Gopi Krishna, Chairman of KVGB, said life insurance is yet to reach more than 50 per cent of rural population in northern Karnataka. He said the bank has a greater role in ensuring that the insurance products reach them.

Highlighting the social security measures launched by the Prime Minister, he said, the PM had launched PMJJBY with an annual contribution of ₹330, the accident insurance scheme Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) with an annual contribution of ₹12, and Atal Pension Yojana (APY) to provide social security benefits to people.

He requested the public to take advantage of the three social security schemes available in all the 629 branches of the bank in nine districts of Karnataka.

Microinsurance is a mechanism to protect the poor against multiple risks such as accidents, illness, death in the family, natural disasters, etc., he said.

The cheques of PMJJBY were handed over to the families of Sidramayya Hattiholi (48), Nadgappa Matti (50), Yallappa Jadhav (48), Sanjeev Dasanavar (45), Kavita Hiremath (38) and Yallappa Bogodi (48) of Kalaghatagi taluk on the occasion.
