ICICI Lombard, the country’s largest private sector general insurance company, has said in a report that around 15 per cent of Indian families has reported hospitalisation of a member “at least once” in the last one year.
While 65 per cent of the Indian families perceived their health condition as good/excellent, the scores varied widely across all classes. It varied widely across different strata of the society at 84 per cent for the affluent and 47 per cent for the lower middle class.
The study titled ‘Living in India’ covered five lakh households. It covered aspects such as family’s health status, frequency of hospitalisation & costs incurred for the same, insurance coverage and confidence in managing medical expenditure.
Mr Bhargav Dasgupta, Managing Director and CEO, ICICI Lombard, said: “It provides us with valuable insights on the spread of insurance across India and perceptions regarding health/health insurance across different demographic groups.’’
The study also highlighted the underlying gaps in the ability to manage one’s health.
