The President of Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Maldives as also the Prime Ministers of Nepal, Bhutan, Mauritius and Speaker of Bangladesh will attend the swearing-in of Prime Minister-designate, Narendra Modi, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed on Friday.
Briefing newspersons, a spokesman of the Ministry of External Affairs said that invitation was sent to eight leaders, of whom seven have confirmed.
At the moment, there is no confirmation on whether Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister of Pakistan, will attend the ceremony.
Modi is to be administered the oath of PM in the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhawan on May 26 at 6 p.m.
Invitations had been extended to the heads of Governments of all South Asian nations to attend the swearing-in.
This is the first time that SAARC leaders have been invited for PM's oath-taking ceremony. This is first for India diplomacy, the spokesman said.
The Indian troops in Thailand for exercise have been advised to return to India, a spokesman of the Ministry of External Affairs said. The Army had staged a coup in Thailand on Thursday.
