A strain of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been discovered in an 8-month old infected baby in Bengaluru, according to sources. But, it is yet to be established whether it is the same strain found in China in recent days that is causing concern the world over.

However, the baby and family have had no history of travel. The case was detected at a private hospital in the city and the sample has not yet been tested in a government lab.

On Saturday, the Union Health Ministry stated that there is no need to panic over the recent surge in respiratory illness cases in China, as reported by The Hindu. The Ministry emphasised that the “situation in China is not unusual” and assured that India is well-prepared to manage respiratory infections effectively.

The statement was issued following a Joint Monitoring Group meeting convened by the Health Ministry to assess the situation. The Ministry highlighted that officials are closely monitoring updates from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other international bodies to stay informed about any potential risks.

HMPV causes symptoms similar to the common cold in humans. Children, people with weak immune systems are most vulnerable to metapneumovirus. Studies show most HMPV cases are mild in nature and most people get it before they turn 5, acccording to reports.
