Air India tragedy live today: Elderly Kurukshetra couple’s daughter among victims of Air India plane crash
Anju Sharma (55), whose parents live in Ramsaran Majra village in Haryana’s Kurukshetra district, was among the victims of the Air India plane that crashed soon after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday.
Anju had boarded the London-bound flight to meet her elder daughter, who is now reaching Ahmedabad after the tragedy that killed 241 of the 242 persons on board.
Anju’s uncle Balkishan Sharma told PTI over the phone on Friday that her parents are yet to be informed about the tragedy, fearing they will be unable to bear the shock.
“I don’t know how to break this tragic news to my brother. But we cannot hide it for too long...,” he said.

Her late husband was an engineer who worked in the oil industry, he said.
“Her brother Millan Sharma and her younger daughter are settled in Vadodara,” Balkishan said.
Anju visited her parents’ village last month, as her father, Jagdish Sharma, a retired government employee, had been unwell and bedridden for some time.
She stayed there for nearly a fortnight, Balkisshan said.
Recalling Anju as a warm, affectionate, and kind-hearted person, Anju’s sister Neelu said she was like a pillar of support for the entire family.

One person survived the crash, while 241 on board were killed, of whom 10 were from Maharashtra, an official said.
He said the aircraft’s pilot, Captain Sumeet Pushkaraj Sabharwal (56), was a resident of Jal Vayu Vihar in the Powai area of Mumbai and lived with his elderly parents.

A Boeing 787 Dreamliner (AI 171), with 242 people on board, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, crashed into a medical college complex in the Meghaninagar area moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Thursday afternoon.

Share market updates: Daily Markets Wrap -12 June 2025
Equities and the dollar retreated as dialed-up trade tensions and geopolitical unease set a broader risk-off tone across markets.
S&P 500 futures dropped 0.5%, putting the US benchmark on track for its first back-to-back loss this month. European stocks also fell while Asian equities were little changed. The dollar slid 0.5%, nearing its weakest level since 2022. Treasury yields weakened across the curve ahead of a closely watched $22 billion auction in the 30-year tenor.
US President Donald Trump ratcheted up trade uncertainty with remarks that he intends to impose unilateral tariffs on dozens of US trading partners in the coming weeks. Separately, market jitters intensified amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.
The cautious mood is stalling a rebound in US equities that had brought the S&P 500 within reach of its all-time high, even as questions persist over the economic impact of Trump’s trade agenda. Resilient earnings and limited economic fallout have supported the rally so far, but traders are questioning how much further the gains can stretch.
“There’s a resistance at this point to really add a lot of risk,” Alastair Pinder, global equity strategist at HSBC Holdings Plc, told Bloomberg TV. “The reason for that is because people think that this tariffs are going to hit growth at some point in the future.”
Thursday’s 30-year Treasury auction will provide a fresh gauge of investor appetite for long-dated debt amid concerns that mounting deficits are dampening demand.
The sale comes as Congress debates Trump’s signature tax legislation, which some estimates suggest could add trillions of dollars to the US budget shortfall, potentially requiring increased bond issuance to fund the deficit.
“We know that Trump is watching these auctions closely, so investors will want to wait to see if there’s any reaction from him if the results don’t turn out well,” said Benoit Peloille, chief investment officer at Natixis Wealth Management.
The dollar’s retreat on Thursday extended losses for the year against a basket of currencies past 8%. The currency had already been weighed down by softer-than-forecast US inflation data, leading traders to fully factor in two quarter-point Federal Reserve interest rate cuts this year.
US producer-price data due later Thursday will offer further clues on the inflation outlook.
Oil pared Wednesday’s surge of more than 4% as traders evaluated Middle East tensions against the latest news on US trade policy. Brent traded below $69 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate neared $67.
American authorities ordered some staff to depart the US embassy in Baghdad after Iran threatened to strike US bases if attacked. CBS reported that US officials have been told that Israel is fully prepared to launch an operation into Iran.

Air India plane crash live updates: Hours after plane crash, Ahmedabad site full of stench, fumes, debris and devastation
) A strong stench of aviation fuel mixed with scorched human flesh lingered in the air hours after the London-bound Air India plane crashed here on Thursday afternoon.
Nine hours after the tragic incident, remnants of fires still flickered on charred stems of trees surrounding the crash site, a haunting reminder of the ferocity of the blaze.
The unbearable stench pervaded the premises of the BJ Medical College and civil hospital. Soon after take-off from the Ahmedabad airport, the plane carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed in the college’s residential quarters housing hostel buildings.
Three buildings bore the brunt of the impact, including a mess hall where several MBBS students were dining when the aircraft came down.
The adjoining two five-storey buildings, home to hospital staff, also suffered severe damage as the resultant inferno raged through them. The buildings were completely blackened.
Massive pieces of debris lay strewn across the site, including mangled metal, twisted beams and charcoaled remains of the buildings reduced to blackened shells. A large fragment of the aircraft’s wing lay on the ground.
The tail-end of the aircraft remained lodged in the mess building, an image that has since gone viral on social media. - PTI

Ahmedabad plane crash: ‘Inferno created by burning fuel made rescue ops extremely difficult’
The temperature in and around the crashed Air India plane rose to around 1,000 degrees C which made the rescue operation extremely difficult, officials said on Thursday night.
Even dogs and birds at the site could not escape, they said.
A London-bound Air India plane carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed in a residential area in Ahmedabad minutes after taking off from the city airport on Thursday afternoon.
“There was 1.25 lakh litres of fuel inside the plane and it caught fire so it was impossible to save anyone,” Union minister Amit Shah told reporters.
A State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) official said their personnel reached the hostel and residential quarters of doctors and staff members of the BJ Medical College, where the aircraft crashed, between 2 to 2.30 pm.
Before that locals had pulled out some people alive but their teams did not get anybody alive.
A senior fire official said, “As the (aircraft’s fuel) tank exploded it created an inferno where temperature rose to 1,000 degrees Celsius in no time. This left little chance for anyone to escape.” An SDRF personnel, who joined the force in 2017, said he has handled crisis situations before but has never seen such a disaster.
“We came here with PPE kits. But the temperature was so high that it made operations difficult. There were debris everywhere. So we had to clear the debris that were already simmering,” he said. - PTI
