The Arabian Sea is only a puff away from hosting another tropical cyclone, the third this year, after a depression over the East-Central basin intensified into a deep depression on Sunday afternoon.
It was located 1,280 km East-South-East of Salalah (Oman); 1,180 km East-South-East of the Socotra Island (Yemen); and 980 km West-North-West of Minicoy in the Lakshadweep Islands.
After intensifying further into a cyclonic storm by Thursday, it is expected to ramp up to a severe cyclonic storm and move west-northwest-wards towards South Oman and adjoining Yemen coasts during the next five days.
Bay storm brewing
Meanwhile, a counterpart storm is in the making over the Bay of Bengal, with a customary low-pressure area popping up over the South-East basin and adjoining North Andaman Sea and becoming ‘well-marked’ by Sunday afternoon.
It will concentrate into a depression by Monday and the IMD expects it to track north-westwards towards the Odisha coast in the three days that follow.
Change in wind pattern
Under the influence of the twin storms, the wind pattern over Peninsular India will undergo a change, with the prevailing South-West monsoon exiting from wherever it is currently active.
Simultaneously, the North-East monsoon rain is expected to commence over Tamil Nadu, Puduchery, Kerala and adjoining areas of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka on Monday.
Wind profile maps on Sunday show seasonal easterlies getting established over the South Peninsula ahead of the onset of the North-East monsoon over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. After the depression in the Bay blows over, what could likely engage the attention of meteorologists is a circulation building a little further away, South-West of Sri Lanka around October 16.
Meanwhile, an IMD outlook for tomorrow and the day after spoke about the possibility of heavy rain over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala while thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and hailstorm may lash Jammu & Kashmir.
Squally winds have been forecast over the South-East and adjoining East-Central as well as West-Central and adjoining South-West Arabian Sea (off Kerala and around the Lakshadweep Islands) and over the Central and adjoining North Bay of Bengal.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea. Those who are out in the Bay have been advised to return.
