As many as 122 private engineering colleges opted for ‘progressive closure’ since last year. Most of these colleges are in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Haryana.
If a college opts for such closure, it cannot admit any more students, but those of existing batches can continue until completion of their studies.
Twenty-three colleges in Maharashtra closed down in 2016-17. The figure for Gujarat was 15, seven for Telangana, 11 for Karnataka, 12 for UP, six for Punjab, 11 for Rajasthan and 13 for Haryana.
