Three students from the University of Tokyo in Japan are on a 10-day visit to the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University here to learn about rainfed paddy cultivation in Tamil Nadu and understand the preferences of rural youth in agriculture.
The team comprises two former students of TNAU — Poornima and Vivek — who are now pursuing their doctoral programme in agriculture at Tokyo, and a UG student, Hiromy, from the Japanese University. They are accompanied by Dr Aki Kamoshita, Professor of Biotechnology, University of Tokyo.
The visit is part of the student and faculty exchange programme that the farm varsity here inked with the University of Tokyo recently.
According to a TNAU release, the team would be visiting Kariapatty village in Virudhunagar to learn about rainfed paddy cultivation, study farmers awareness regarding climate change, global warming and water efficient paddy cultivation.
They also plan to conduct a survey to understand the interest among rural youth in taking up agriculture as a profession, said the Director of the Centre for Plant and Molecular Breeding at TNAU, Chandra Babu, who is coordinating the visit.
