The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has a new Chairperson in Poonam Kishore Saxena. She had assumed charge on Tuesday.
A 1975-batch Indian Revenue Service officer, Poonam Saxena was selected as CBDT Member in March 2011. She holds a masters degree as well as a doctorate in economics.
Known for her hands-on approach in the income-tax department, she has ensured fast-tracking of various projects. She has also worked as Director-General (Investigation) in Jaipur for three years. CBDT is the highest policy-making body on direct taxes.
During her long career, she has worked in Lucknow, Meerut, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Delhi in various areas like administration of income-tax, appeals and recovery.
Now both the CBDT and CBEC are headed by women. Praveen Mahajan was recently appointed as full-fledged Chairperson of the Central Board of Excise and Customs, which is the highest policy-making body on indirect taxes.
