“Times have changed. The patriarchal social order no more holds. A new dawn has set in where all of you should experience the economic freedom for self-sustenance. A plethora of career choices are before you to choose from. One only needs to be aware of the change, rise up and equip one-self to fit into the emerging new economic and social order,” said Manjula Rangarajan, Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi Division, Southern Railway.

She was delivering a lecture on ‘Career Prospects’ under the Business Line Club of the Cauvery College for Women in the city, sponsored by Tamilnad Mercantile Bank (TMB), Tuticorin, on Wednesday.

She said, unlike earlier , women are increasingly getting educated. But they should not treat educational qualifications as a mere passport for marriage.

They should acquire knowledge to gain economic independence and experience the freedom of self-sustenance. The choices are plenty to build up a good career path. Making a SWOT analysis about themselves, they should identify the choices before them and aim at achieving them, she stressed.

Career options

She spoke on the general/popular career options for girls students such as taking up teaching or other options in private and public services such as chartered accountancy, company secretary-ship, banking, mass communication, the human rights and social service fields, publishing industry etc. She detailed at length about UPSC and Civil services and, in particular, about Indian Railway Service and the means to enter into these services.

Not to be left behind in efforts, she exhorted them on the importance of developing language skills, computing skills, habit of reading newspapers and magazines.

These would help in launching themselves into a good career growth with confidence, while facing any competitive environment, she mentioned.

Earlier, A. Senthil Anandan, Regional Manager, Tamilnad Mercantile Bank, Tiruchi, briefed about the services offered to the students’ community and women entrepreneurs. V Sujatha, Principal; M. Jayaraman, President; and K. Rengarajan, Secretary of the college, participated in the proceedings.
