When Singh sought `primer’ on Department of Atomic Energy from Kakodkar

As erudite as he was, one of the first things Manmohan Singh did after he became prime minister in 2004 was to ask Dr Anil Kakodkar, then chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, for a “primer” on his department.

It was not that Singh, an economist-turned-politician, was unfamiliar with India’s nuclear energy and weapons situation, noted Dr Kakodkar, reminiscing about his interactions with the former PM who died in Delhi on Thursday at age 92.

Before he became PM, Singh had served as a member of the AEC.

“I was surprised at this demand for a primer, because of the time constraints a prime minister has. I told him that the primer on the subject cannot be restricted to two pages,” Kakodkar told PTI on Friday.

Vani Devi, an MLC of Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS), said the situation in the country would have been unimaginable had the economic reforms undertaken by Singh as finance minister been not taken up.

When Manmohan Singh wrote a cheque for gains accruing from rupee devaluation!

Manmohan Singh held an overseas bank account that had his earnings from working abroad. The value of his savings, in rupee terms, went up following the July 1991 decision of the government to devalue the Indian currency.

Instead of pocketing the gains, Manmohan Singh, who was the finance minister in the PV Narasimha Rao government at that time, just wrote a cheque for the incremental gains and had it deposited in the Prime Minister National Relief Fund.

Baba Kalyani, Chairman & MD, Bharat Forge Ltd on Manmohan Singh

I am deeply saddened by the demise of Dr Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India, whose

contribution to laying the foundations of Modern India is unparalleled.

The decade starting mid-1980s is often regarded as the most tumultuous period in Independent India’s history

when the country was engulfed with several challenges across all fronts - domestic, economic and geo-political.

It is amidst such challenging environment that an economist turned politician, Dr Manmohan Singh was at the

helm of affairs of the Reserve Bank of India, the Planning Commission and later, assumed charge as the Finance

Minister in PM Rao’s cabinet. The Budget, the New Industrial Policy and Foreign Trade Policy that Dr Singh

announced in 1991 are pathbreaking reforms in India’s economic history, that heralded the country’s

transformation from a command and control based to a free-market economy and set course for India and Indian

companies to participate in the globalization era.

While the 1991 economic reforms were his defining moment, Dr Singh’s successive terms as the Prime Minister

of India will be remembered for the historic US-India Nuclear deal, setting-up the UIDAI and subsequent launch

of AADHAR, the MNREGA scheme promoting rural infrastructure creation among others. With a distinct imprint

of an outstanding economist, these initiatives had wide standing impact in attracting foreign investment,

strengthening international trade and commerce and promoting inclusive economic growth.

As a representative of Indian Industry, I was fortunate to have had multiple opportunities to meet and interact

with Dr Manmohan Singh including as part of the delegations accompanying him to United States and Japan. A

man of remarkable integrity, Dr Singh was an attentive listener who spoke gently with profound impact.

The world will remember Dr Manmohan Singh as an outstanding economist, an astute policy maker and a global

statesman. He will be deeply missed, and his contributions will continue to inspire us for generations to come.

May his soul rest in peace.

Manmohan Singh Death News Updates: Principal Secretary Dr PK Mishra mourns

We have lost a very distinguished leader, an eminent economist and a great human being, with the passing away of Dr. Manmohan Singh. My memories of Dr. Manmohan Singh date back to the time when he was teaching at the Delhi School of Economics. I was in my M.A., first year those days. Seeing him among the stalwart professors in that era was reassuring for a student like me, having come from Sambalpur district in Western Odisha. Those were the days when very eminent professors such as Amartya Sen, Mrinal Datta Chaudhuri, A.M. Khusro, K.N. Raj, Sukhamoy Chakraborty, Dharma Kumar and others were teaching there. Dr. Manmohan Singh had a remarkable ability to explain complex topics in international trade in a way every student can understand, making learning easier for students. He was extremely unassuming and low profile.

Later I had the privilege of interacting with him when working as Secretary to the National Disaster Management Authority and Secretary to Government of India in the Ministry of Agriculture during his tenure as Prime Minister. Whenever I met him, I found the same simplicity, sincerity and humility in his demeanour.

My heartfelt condolences and thoughts are with his family and friends during these difficult times.

Manmohan Singh Death News Updates: A reluctant politician who helped India break out of its ‘autarkic’ shell

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday night, leaves a lasting legacy. He would go down as an extraordinarily self-effacing, two-term Prime Minister (2004-14), and as celebrated Finance Minister between 1991 and 1996. A ‘technocrat’ in politics, he will be remembered for decisively altering the direction and trajectory of the Indian economy after pulling it out of its dire mess in 1991. One of the great triumphs of India’s reform process, thanks to Singh, lies in how it managed its transition from a dirigisme economy to a market-driven one without ever being tripped up by financial instability.

Now, it is easy to take for granted India’s economic journey out of the BoP mess of 1991 to the heights of the high growth years between 2003 and 2011. The mess was a result of high fiscal deficits spilling over into an adverse current account balance with no capital flows – the Gulf War of 1990 worsening it all by raising oil prices. Singh as Finance Minister devalued the currency (pegged at a ridiculous level) in two swift strokes to restore investor confidence, created a semblance of a capital market, reduced tariffs in a calibrated way and relaxed licensing curbs on investment to create a confident India that was to break out of its autarkic shell.
