The continued movement of western disturbances over North-West India is expected to trigger thunderstorms and dust storms accompanied by squalls and gusty winds for the next three days.

These events would pan out across the hills and plains of North-West India and later into East and North-East India, in line with the movement of the western disturbances.

CYCLONIC CIRCULATIONS

One such disturbance is parked over Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh this morning, while a successor is stationed over Iran and Afghanistan. The first has thrown down a trough from West Rajasthan reaching North Chhattisgarh, and hosting a cyclonic circulation over North-East Rajasthan and adjoining West Madhya Pradesh. The satellite map shows this circulation sitting over an area bounded by Udaipur, Chhoti Sadri, Mandsaur, Banswara, and Dungarpur.

Meanwhile, a trough associated with the incoming disturbance and packed with rain/ thundershowers, extends over the rest of Iran and Afghanistan right into the Pakistan border. This trough would cut across the Pak-India border over the next couple of days even as the prevailing one over Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh runs its course.

WEATHER IN SOUTH

There are a couple of western disturbances seen originating from the Mediterranean/ Caspian Sea later into the week, but it remains to be seen what form they take after crossing the border here. Meanwhile, in the South, south-westerly and south-easterly winds are shown to be converging over Maldives-Lakshadweep, to set up a cyclonic circulation. This is expected to play no small role in sustaining the summer shower activity over Kerala, adjoining Tamil Nadu and South interior Karnataka for today.

The morning satellite pictures show a convective area sitting half-way from Lakshadweep to the Kerala coast over mainland India, with cloud cover extending from Kozhikode to Kollam along the coast. It also covers the hills adjoining Tamil Nadu from Pollachi, Anamudi, Idukki, and Vagamon to Punalur.

Fresh clouds from the Gulf of Mannar are seen invading the South-East coast of Tamil Nadu along Thoothukudi, Dhanushkodi, Athiyuthu, Sivaganga, Madurai, Karaikudi, Kothari and Pattukottai.

The India Met Department has forecast the possibility of thunderstorms and heavy rain over Kerala, South Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the next couple of days.
