The Hyderabad-based LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) is one of the 11 global expert institutes on the Commonwealth Eye Health Consortium.
The Commonwealth Eye Health Consortium has been established to bring together world-class expertise and facilitate eye care professionals to pursue research into eye conditions that affect millions of people.
The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust announced a £7.1-million grant to enable experts from various institutions to form a consortium to combat avoidable blindness.
The consortium will be coordinated by the International Centre for Eye Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. It aims to achieve a long-term impact in strengthening eye health systems and improve the quality of eye care for many people throughout the Commonwealth.
LVPEI is one of the two eyecare majors from India on the consortium. Gullapalli N Rao, Chair, LVPEI, is part of the steering committee of the consortium.
There are 285 million visually impaired people in the world, 39 million of whom are blind. At least 80 per cent of blindness and visual impairment is curable or treatable, and good quality eyecare is a scarce resource for millions of people across the globe, including in many Commonwealth countries.
