A medical researcher and an urban infrastructure expert, both women, are set to contribute to important global fora. Geeta K. Vemuganti, Professor in the School of Medical Sciences, University of Hyderabad (UoH), has been invited to contribute to several chapters for the World Health Organisation (WHO) Blue Book on Eye Tumors.

She is in Lyon, France to participate in the Consensus and Editorial Meeting of the WHO Classification of Eye Tumours, being held at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) there this weekend. Geeta has done extensive work on stem cells and ocular pathology in a long stint at the LV Prasad Eye Institute, which has won her several awards and recognition.

Karuna Gopal, President, Futuristic Cities, and a well-known expert championing the cause of shaping smart cities, has been invited by the Minister of Artificial Intelligence (AI) of the UAE to speak at the World Government Summit in February. The summit, this year, will have global leaders, policy makers and thought leaders from 130 countries. Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim and International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde, Prime Minister of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, and Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, are among the key speakers.

Karuna Gopal, based out of Hyderabad, is an adviser to the Centre’s smart cities initiative and has served as an urban expert for the World Bank, DFID (Department for International Development, UK), USAID (United States Agency for International Development), BMGF (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) and ADB (Asian Development Bank) in the past. Last year Japan was the Guest of Honour Country at the summit, while India is invited this year.
