Hyderabad city could well enter the record books for planting an all-time high number of 25 lakh saplings on a single day.
This is a bold initiative to be implemented by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in and around the city. All along the Outer Ring Road, close to 2.5 lakh saplings will be planted.
Stating this, the Telangana State Minister for Urban Development, K T Rama Rao, said, Hyderabad has seen a depletion of green cover and needs urgent steps to improve the situation.
He hoped that the monsoon this year would be good so that the programme will get a fillip.
The State Chief Minister, K Chandrasekhara Rao, had announced a project to plant 2.30 crore saplings in 10 districts in five years under 'Haritha Haram’. However, the erratic monsoon last year proved to be a setback, though the district administrations had dug up trenches and did all the groundwork needed.
Uttar Pradesh holds the previous record of planting 10 lakh saplings on a single day.
