With December 31 being the last date for the phase-III digitisation of the cable television sector in the country, around 40 per cent of urban households in Dakshina Kannada district are yet to install set-top boxes (STBs) to get uninterrupted television services from their cable operators.

This came to the fore at a meeting convened by the Dakshina Kannada district administration on Saturday.

Chairing the meeting, Kumar, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, asked the cable operators in the district to adhere to the December 31 deadline.

The Centre has mandated that cable TV transmission would be done through digital addressable cable TV system (DAS) only. However, set-top boxes are required for viewing the channels in DAS.

The switch-over from analogue system to digital system is being done in a phased manner. Phases I and II, covering metros and 38 cities above the population of one million, have already been completed.

Under phase-III, cable TV users in urban areas have to install set-top boxes at their home by December 31.

Dakshina Kannada district has two multi-system operators and around 140 local cable operators.

Urban areas in Dakshina Kannada have around 2 lakh cable TV connections. Set-top boxes have been installed in around 1.16 lakh connections.
