The Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) wants more children of its members to pursue careers in Civil Services.

In an informal chat with Business Line on the sidelines of the 40th annual general meeting of the cooperative in Mangalore on Tuesday, K Padmanabha, President of Campco, said the company’s board has decided to earmark a portion of members’ development fund as education fund.

This fund will be used for training the members’ children for IAS and IPS examinations. The cooperative is in talks with a few educational institutions in this regard.

Padmanabha said that usually children of arecanut growers prefer to pursue careers in engineering and medicine. Very few opt for Civil Services.

Students will be given orientation for Civil Services training after they finish their 10th standard. The educational institution will identify those who have the potential by the time they finish their pre-university course.

Such students will be selected for rigorous training, he said. The intention is to develop a cadre of civil servants who understand the problems of farmers and work for their welfare.

In 2013-14, the cooperative earmarked ₹1 crore for members’ development fund. The net profit of the cooperative stood at ₹39.93 crore during 2013-14 as against ₹14.85 crore during 2012-13.
