The Coast Guard base in New Mangalore received the second hovercraft on Monday. A press release said here that Hovercraft H-198 will be based permanently in New Mangalore.
The 21-metre-long hovercraft can achieve maximum speed of 90 km per hour. It is capable of undertaking tasks such as surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue and rendering assistance to small boats and crafts at sea.
The release said the hovercraft is capable of operation on land and over sea. Areas inaccessible from both sea and land such as marshy lands and isolated islands can be approached by hovercraft. It operates by skimming over the surface of water using a cushion of air created by two propellers fitted on top of the craft.
The release said that the hovercraft will help strengthen the coastal security along Karnataka coast. It is armed with heavy machine guns and modern communication and navigation equipment. The hovercraft is commanded by Commandant Amitabh Banerjee, it said.
The Coast Guard at New Mangalore had received the first hovercraft H-196 a few days ago.
