Three Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) activists including a central committee member of the party, Bimal Dorjee, was arrested from West Bengal’s Darjeeling district, police said on Friday.

According to a senior police officer, the arrests were made in pursuance of the order of the Election Commission to execute pending warrants.

Dorjee is arrested with respect to a pending case in 2008 during the peak of the Gorkhaland agitation period.

In a parallel development, the State Government opposed the anticipatory bail plea made by GJM Chief Bimal Gurung; General Secretary Roshan Giri, and women’s wing chief Asha Gurung.

All three were named in a charge-sheet filed by the CID for an attempt to murder case of the security guard of Gorkha League leader, Madan Tamang, in 2010.

The development has raised a few eyebrows in the political circle as it came days after GJM went against the wishes of Trinamool Congress in extending support to the BJP candidates in Darjeeling and two adjoining Lok Sabha constituencies, having substantial Nepali speaking population.

GJM General Secretary Roshan Giri was not available for comments.

In August-September 2013, the State played a strong arm tactics against the GJM leadership for resorting to indefinite strikes and agitations demanding statehood for Darjeeling.

Several GJM supporters and senior leaders were arrested by the police.

They were later released on bail after GJM chief Bimal Gurung rejoined his post as Chief Exectuive of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) in January.

GTA is an autonomous body looking after the development of Darjeeling hills.
