Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa wants an All India Institute of Medical Sciences campus set up in Tamil Nadu during the current financial year, as part a Budget plan to expand the autonomous public medical college group in the country. There are seven so far, with the six new campuses having come up over the last two years at the cost of ₹840 crore per institution.
Possession of landsIn a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jayalalithaa has informed that the State and its agencies are in possession of well-connected land parcels in the districts of Chengalpattu, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Erode, and Madurai.
The letter follows a directive from Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan asking the State to identify land for setting up an AIIMS.
“I have already directed officials to provide all details required by the Government of India,” Jayalalithaa wrote in the letter, requesting Modi to include the State in the first phase of expansion of AIIMS.
