Segregation of waste at source is important for the successful implementation of sanitation programmes, according to an official.

Speaking at a meeting to review the implementation of Swachch Bharat Abhiyan in Mangalore on Saturday, Bharat Lal Meena, Karnataka Agriculture Secretary and in-charge of Dakshina Kannada district, said that the segregation of waste at source helps reduce the issues related to solid waste management to a great extent.

Stressing the need for an action plan in this matter, he said a system should be put in place for solid waste management.

AB Ibrahim, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, said that people should be educated on the need to maintain clean surroundings.

Highlighting the steps taken by an urban local body under in Dakshina Kannada district, Jagadish Shetty, president of Puttur Town Municipal Council, said that members from all sections of society have been included in its plan for the implementation of Swachch Bharat Abhiyan.

The town municipal council, in association with a non-governmental agency in the district, has implemented a project to prepare compost from wet waste in residential areas. Citizens and ‘Kalyan Mantaps’ in the town have been asked to implement vermi-composting methods in their backyard.

Hotels in the town that generate a huge quantity of wet waste have been asked to implement bio-gas plants in their premises.

School children have been asked to bring plastic carry bags from their home to school for the effective disposal of plastic waste, he said.

Gokuldas Nayak, Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation, said that there was an increase of around 15 per cent in waste collection during the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan from September 25 to October 2.
