History books are now selling like hot cakes in Telangana, thanks to the huge number of aspirants for State government jobs.

“We have already sold over one lakh books on Telangana history and expect the demand to cross four to five lakhs books soon,” A Satyanarayana Reddy, Director of Telugu Academy, told Business Line .

New syllabus The Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) has included significant portions from the history, culture and economy of the State in the recently released new syllabus for government posts, including the coveted executive posts in the Group I and II services.

There has been no single authentic book on regional history, its economy or business when the State was formed in June 2014.

“Lakhs of copies of an intermediate book for the new State syllabus published by Telugu Academy have been sold,” said Reddy.

Encouraged by the demand, the Academy has now lined up publication of specialised books on various aspects of Telangana. The books are almost ready and are expected to hit the market next week.

Surfeit The market is already flooded with a surfeit of “history” books, some bordering on fiction and penned by untrained and unknown authors aiming for a fast buck.

“Unfortunately, there has not been a single comprehensive and authentic work on Telangana history so far. The Academy books and those by trained and qualified authors should be used as the standard,” said Aadapa Satyanarayana, professor of history, Osmania University, who was a member of the syllabus revision panel of TSPSC.

A few historians, including Satyanarayana, are currently engaged in writing Telangana history books.

Confused candidates Job aspirants and students are at the receiving end as they are unable to tell fact and fiction apart from the scores of bit banks available in the market today.

There are over five lakh government job aspirants in the State capital alone who will have to master regional history and culture besides its economic aspects to clear recruitment examinations.

Though the government had promised to fill over one lakh jobs after assuming power in June 2014, it could notify only a few hundred vacancies so far.
