The Andhra Pradesh Government has stepped up efforts to expedite the Visakhapatnam-Chennai Industrial Corridor and the Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor seen to play a crucial role in the transformation of the State’s industrial scene.
A presentation was made by the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) on Visakha-Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC) and Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridors before State Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Union Minister of Commerce Nirmala Sitharaman in Vijayawada late on Friday.
While Asian Development Bank (ADB) is financing the Visakha-Chennai Industrial Corridor, the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is backing up the Chennai-Bangalore corridor. These two agencies are keen on completing these two corridors at the earliest, Amitabh Kant, Secretary, DIPP, said, according to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office.
During the meeting some suggestions with regard to these corridors, development of nodes along them, and national manufacturing investment zones, were made. The Government was asked to include the drought-prone districts of Anantapur, Kurnool and Kadapa districts in the plan.
Visakhapatnam, Krishnapatnam and Yerpedu-Srikalahasti have been identified as important nodes in these two corridors. Underlining the importance of Krishnapatnam node, Amitabh Kant said the Krishnapatnam Port would emerge as the most important port in the southern India. Already Krisnapatnam is competing with Chennai Port in cargo handling, and is expected to soon rise to a premier position.
Visakhapatnam has been identified as an important node under VCIC, which is spread over 11,200 acres. If special purpose vehicles are created for these nodes, works can be accelerated, the DIPP Secretary said.
Valmikipuram in Prakasam district and Kalikiri in Chittoor district have been identified for establishment of National Manufacturing Investment Zones.
A mega leather cluster, which is expected to provide direct employment for 4,500 people and indirect employment for another 15,000 people, is coming up in Nellore district.
NID
With the classes for National Institute of Design (NID), set up in the Nagarjuna University campus have already commenced with 54 students, the Chief Minister announced that 100 acres of land would be allocated to NID near Vijayawada.
