While government officials’ reassurance and police patrolling in sensitive area persuaded migrants to return, the business, industrial and commercial establishments remain without many workers across districts of North and Central Gujarat, the epicentre of mass exodus. Businesses and industries also assured them safety and succour.

Congress’ take

Congress MLA Dhavalsinh Zala accused Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel of “plotting” the exodus in a bid to dislodge Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. “Patel’s Mehsana district witnessed maximum migration,” he said.

Patel, however, dismissed the allegation, saying the main Opposition party is trying to deflect the issue as Congress legislator Alpesh Thakor and his Gujarat Kshatriya Thakor Sena were involved in the disturbances.

Minister of State for Home Pradipsinh Jadeja, on Tuesday, said action will be taken against Thakor Sena members involved in threatening and targeting migrant workers. The Cyber Cell of Ahmedabad police’s Crime Branch had arrested Rahul Thakor, social media convener of Alpesh Thakor, for allegedly fanning anti-migrant sentiments.

The disturbances started last week after a labourer from Bihar allegedly raped a 14-month-old girl in Sabarkantha district of North Gujarat. Nearly 60 cases have been registered against miscreants in various districts and around 500 have been arrested.
