Union Minister for Home Affairs Rajnath Singh has said on Monday that the Centre would give financial assistance to State Governments to install underground electric cables in coastal areas in the ratio of 75: 25. During a meeting of Consultative Committee of Home Affairs here, Singh told this to Goa Congress Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik.

Naik told Business Line that during the meeting which was held on the subject of "Disaster Management Preparedness" he suggested that the Central Government should fix percentage of compensation for loss of life and property rather than fixing any fixed amount which happens to be on lower scale.

Naik made a suggestion that whenever a MP makes contribution towards disaster in any State, the project constructed out of MP's funds must be made known to the MP. At present, the amount thus contributed goes in general kitty.

Naik also wanted to know whether Chinese equipments are used in the radar systems used by our Meteorological Departments. He also suggested that village panchayats should be taken into confidence in the matter of disaster management.

Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia, who is a member of Consultative Committee, suggested that a provision should be made to provide for compensation in case of loss or damage to museums in the country due to disasters.

Bhuvaneshwar Kalita suggested that cases of soil erosion should be included in the disaster management.

More than 12 MPs belonging to various political parties took part in the discussions.
