The Congress on Thursday attacked the Centre over a reported statement made by the counsel of Christian Michel, an accused in the AgustaWestland case, that the Narendra Modi government and its agencies were forcing him to sign a false confessional statement naming UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in return for exoneration from charges.

The allegation is set to rock the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which is about to take up a no-confidence motion against the Centre on Friday.

The Congress’ media in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala termed the revelations as stunning and said they had blown the lid off the “concerted conspiracy”, “blind vendetta” and “web of lies” weaved by Modi against the Congress leadership.

“Even as Christian Michel has been detained in Dubai, Indian agencies have failed to produce any evidence in the courts so far and are merely involved in hatching a conspiracy against leaders of Opposition and using Christian Michel as a tool for the purpose,” Surjewala said in a statement on Thursday.

“Never before in the history of India has a Prime Minister been found complicit in gaining ‘false evidence’ against Opposition leaders to seek revenge. This shocking expose is also a testimony to the disease prevailing in CBI/ED prostrating before the Prime Minister to collect fake and false evidence with a single handed aim of tarnishing the reputation of Opposition leaders and serving the political masters as a ‘captive puppet’ and a ‘willing tool’ of malicious conspiracy,” he said.
