Barring a few incidents, the Dakshina Kannada district bandh was total and peaceful till 4 pm on Friday.
The district bandh call was given by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajarang Dal in Dakshina Kannada in protest against the death of a person in an alleged attack on late Thursday evening.
Buses and auto-rickshaws remained off the road in Mangaluru on Friday following the bandh. Passengers coming from other places found it difficult as there was neither city bus nor auto-rickshaws.
Shops and other business establishments also remained closed.
Clashes
However, clashes took place between two groups in Savanur village of Puttur taluk. Police, who rushed to the spot, brought the situation under control.
The district administration, which reviewed the situation on late Thursday evening, imposed prohibitory order in Dakshina Kannada. On Friday, it extended the prohibitory order till 10 pm of November 15.
Road block
Initially, VHP and Bajarang Dal had planned to organise a road block for one hour on Friday in protest against the Madikeri incident where one of the VHP activists was killed in a clash to mark the Tipu Jayanthi.
Following the death of Harish, who was allegedly attacked and killed by some unidentified people on Thursday evening in Bantwal of Dakshina Kannada district, these organisations called for a bandh in the district on Friday.
Tension prevailed in BC Road Town of Bantwal taluk on Thursday evening as stones were thrown on a group following a meeting to protest the Madikeri clash. Later on Thursday evening, Harish, who was coming out of a shop after having a cold drink with his friend Samiulla, was allegedly attacked by some unidentified people.
Alok Mohan, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), visited Bantwal on Friday to take stock of the situation there.
The Dakshina Kannada district in charge Minister, B Ramanath Rai, has said that the district police has formed a special team to investigate into the death of Harish.
Speaking to presspersons after visiting the family of Harish in Bantwal on Friday, he said that the government has announced Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the family of the victim.
Urging the people not to heed to any rumours, he asked them to remain calm.
