Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) has said the institute will set up an Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) in the East African country of Rwanda. Recently, a delegation of policy makers from Rwanda visited the institute.

According to the agreement signed between the governments of Rwanda and India, EDII will provide technical support in establishing EDC to promote a culture of entrepreneurship in Rwanda. Once established, the Centre will conduct a new enterprise creation programme, performance improvement programme, growth programme, family business management programme and programmes for start-ups, bankers and stakeholders in the entrepreneurship ecosystem, among others.

It will try to promote high-impact enterprises, enterprises which adopt innovative technology, quality manufacturing and sustainable industrial development. Over the next five years, EDC, Rwanda aims to train around 17,000 participants in Rwanda through more than 350 programmes.

Dr Sunil Shukla, Director, EDII, said, "Entrepreneurship in Rwanda is limited to micro-enterprise development and is at the subsistence level only. There are hardly any 'high net worth' or ' high value' or 'high impact' entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial dynamism in Rwanda. As autonomous supply is limited and insufficient, there is a need to augment it by induced supply through policy interventions and human resource development (HRD). It will be geared towards promoting and strengthening SMEs."

Commenting on the state of enterpreneurship in their country, Hakuzimana Domina, Director of Entrepreneurship Development, Ministry of Trade & Industry, Rwanda, said, "We want to make Rwanda a fast growing economy and hence are promoting entrepreneurship in our country through collaboration with India. Through this strategic partnership, we are building a long-term diplomatic relationship with India, who is offering us technical support through EDII for addressing entrepreneurship issues."
