Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday asserted that Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of non-violence and religious tolerance are more relevant in the times when “intolerance” and “extremism” are on the rise.
“On the occasion of Gandhiji’s death anniversary today, I pay homage to this great soul for his selfless invaluable contribution to humanity,” the Chief Minister tweeted.
Thousands of Congressmen also took the pledge to fight against evil forces and carry forward the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, he added in the tweet.
The Congress party had organised a state-wide booth committee meeting today with the chief minister attending a meeting at Ward No 10 in Upper Assam’s Jorhat town.
The Assam government also observed Martyrs’ Day on the 67th death anniversary of the Father of the Nation and those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for the country’s freedom.
