Stepping up the attack on leaders of the BJP, with whom his Telugu Desam Party broke ties last week, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday said he had waited four years for the Centre to deliver on its promises and implement provisions of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014.
“Instead of finding ways and means to honour the commitments, the BJP wasted time, and it now appears that they are gearing up for war in the State. Are they going to wage a war against the Telugu people, or are they going to wage a war against me, because I have asked them to honour promises?” he asked.
The Chief Minister’s comments were in response to the reported comments of BJP leader Ram Madhav taunting the Chief Minister. “Till now the CM has been on the offensive and we on the defensive, adhering to coalition dharma. From now on, we will be on the offensive and ask all the questions, and he will be on the defensive.”
Greeting the people on the occasion of Ugadi, the Telugu New Year, Naidu on Sunday said he would dedicate his life to serving the people of the State. He vowed to complete the Polavaram irrigation project and build the State capital, Amaravati.
Congress’ promise
Meanwhile, the Congress passed a resolution at its plenary in New Delhi on Saturday promising to implement all the provisions of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014, and to grant special category status (SCS) to the State. In 2014, speaking in the Rajya Sabha, then prime minister Manmohan Singh had promised the SCS to Andhra Pradesh. The BJP had backed it then. The promise was, however, not included in the Act, which provided the legal basis to carve out Telangana from undivided Andhra Pradesh. SCS, though, figured prominently in the 2014 election manifestos of all parties.
The TDP and the YSR Congress (YSRC), the most prominent parties in Andhra Pradesh, have submitted separate notices for a no-confidence motion against the NDA government in the Lok Sabha. The matter may come up for discussion, or voting, on Monday.
