The Janata Dal (Secular) is likely to finalise its candidates for the Karnataka Assembly elections by the third week of February. Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru on Monday, HD Deve Gowda, former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo, said that the partly will try to finalise its candidates for Assembly elections by second or third week of February.

The party wants to contest all the 224 assembly seats in Karnataka. Stating that the party has association with the Left parties in Kerala, he said JD(S) is ready to allocate some assembly segments to Left parties in Karnataka also to maintain that relationship. Asked if the JD(S) will have any post-poll alliance with the Congress in case of a hung assembly, Gowda said: “I have burnt my fingers having gone to support Congress earlier”.

Stating that JD(S) had 58 MLAs and Congress 63 MLAs in 2004, he said in spite of that he had to face many problems then.

To a query on the entry of people from other parties to JD(S), he said one of the former MLAs from Uttara Kannada district has joined the party now. Stating that many more are likely to join the party in the coming days, he said he will not reveal the names of other entrants to the party now.

Gowda said that the party would like to have its representatives from all the districts in state assembly. He is confident of strengthening the party in all the districts in the state, he added.
