MBBS graduates who did not comply with one-year rural service have paid Rs 7 crore as penalty to the Karnataka Government till now, according to the Health Minister.

Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of his visit to Ullal on the outskirts of Mangalore on Friday, Health Minister U.T. Khader said a Bill making one-year rural service mandatory for MBBS graduates is before the President for his assent.

Though the government collected Rs 7 crore as penalty from the MBBS graduates till now, the lack of medical service in rural areas affect rural population. In such a situation, there is a need to make rural service compulsory for fresh MBBS graduates, he added.
