Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao performed bhoomi puja for the construction of new Secretariat and Assembly buildings in the city.
The new Secretariat complex will come up at the existing campus abutting the Hussain Sagar at a cost of ₹400 crore, while the Legislative Assembly and Council buildings complex is being taken up at Errum Manzil at an estimated cost of ₹100 crore.
Citizen groups and Opposition parties have flayed the plan saying the government is resorting to wasteful expenditure as the existing buildings are in good condition.
The Chief Minister, however, has decided to go ahead with his plans. He had not visited the Secretariat many times in his first stint and run the administration from the Camp office at Begumpet.
He wanted the new buildings to come up at the Bison Polo grounds in Secunderabad. With the Centre refusing to hand over the land, he decided to construct a brand new Secretariat at the existing campus, while choosing the 17-acre plot at Errum Manzil for the Assembly-Council complex.
