Amid uproar over Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s power bill for April and May coming to ₹91,000, the AAP government said the bill had been misinterpreted.

“The bill is a combined bill of his camp office, janata darbar hall and home, not just for his residence alone,” said Delhi Industries, Health and Power Minister Satyendra Jain.

“Hundreds of people come to meet him. It is all for official purpose. How can you claim it is all for his home? It is completely incorrect,” said Jain after attending a summit on micro, small and medium enterprises organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry here on Tuesday.

On June 29, an RTI query filed by advocate and activist Vivek Garg revealed that Kejriwal’s Civil Lines residence’s electricity bill for April and May was ₹ 91,000.

The General Administration Department of the Delhi government furnished the copies to Garg.

But, the Delhi BJP claimed the bill was over ₹1 lakh.

Meanwhile, at the summit, Jain said the Delhi government is working to bring down power bills in the city.

“It will take time. Delhi does not have power generation of its own. We have asked for a coal block from the Central government and they have accepted our request. Wherever and whenever we get that we will build a plant next to the coal block which would help bring down the cost of power,” he said.

“What one can’t understand is why the discoms (distribution utilities) buy power at higher rates. We are working to rectify this,” he added.
