Leather sector is moving up the value chain from just producing for export markets to designing products, according to PR Aqeel Ahmed, Regional Chairman – South, Council for Leather Exports.
The sector faces the challenge of more than doubling its size from about $12 billion to over $27 billion over the next five years. As of now, the domestic and export size are roughly equal and both the sectors will have to grow with a target of $15 billion from exports and $12 billion from the domestic market.
Designer fairThis will not be just about making products for export brands but also value-added service such as designing products, enhancing the level of skills and growing capacity.
Aqeel Ahmed said in line with the evolving needs the CLE has for the first time ever, organised a designer fair with over 26 international designers are showcasing their work.
Footwear CongressThe 19{+t}{+h} International Technical Footwear Congress, a three-day event, is an official event of the International Union of Shoe Industry Technicians is being organised for the first time.
The theme is future footwear factory. India, the second largest footwear producer globally, is hosting the event for the first time.
International brands and markets are looking for new manufacturing sites as an alternative to China. Indian industry can tap the opportunity because of its continuing cost advantage, he said.
