West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that her party would meet the President, Pranab Mukherjee, with an appeal to oust the UPA-II Government.
Her comments came in the backdrop of Thursday’s Cabinet decision to allow FDI in pension funds and enhancing the limit of FDI in the insurance sector.
She further reiterated her party’s decision to seek a “No Confidence Motion” against the Union Government.
“The minority Government cannot play such immoral role. Let us move a No-Confidence Motion. We have decided to meet the Hon’ble President with an appeal to oust the UPA-II minority Government,” she wrote on her Facebook page.
According to Banerjee, the Centre had “crossed the laxman rekha ” by increasing the FDI percentage from 26 to 49 in the insurance sector and introducing 26 per cent FDI in pension sector. The decision would “make lifelong savings of individuals totally insecure.”
“Is it the intention of the UPA Government to sell out the country? We should unitedly oppose all such moves and will not allow the Government to be bailed out after a series of such anti-people decisions,” she wrote.
Appealing to all parties in UPA-II to withdraw support from it in the “greater interest of the people”, Banerjee said, “I will also appeal to those supporting UPA to come out and oppose these moves. Sarkar jaana jaroori hai, desh ko bachane ke liye …(to save the country, this Government must fall)”
Mid-day meal scheme affected
In a similar attack earlier in the day, Banerjee had claimed that non-subsidised LPG cylinders would affect the mid-day meal schemes across various schools.
“The Central Government has never thought about the fate of poor school children provided with mid-day meal. There is a fear that these school children may have to go without food in schools, due to enormous increase in price of non-subsidised LPG cylinders,” she maintained.
According to her, common people have been burdened with an additional Rs 127 (exclusive of taxes) on each cylinder. “The price is likely to go up further in the coming months. Is it what the common people expect from reforms?” she wrote.
Intensifying Protests
Meanwhile, expressing her resolve to fight on for the people’s cause, Banerjee continued her tirade against the Centre at public meeting at Sarisahat in the South 24 Parganas district of the State.
“The Centre has been unashamedly attacking the poor which I will not tolerate. I will not relent in my fight against injustice and atrocities. I will continue the fight throughout my life,” she said.
