Ramakrishna Mission, which has been conducting ‘Swacchata Abhiyan’ (cleanliness campaign) in Mangaluru for the last four years, has decided to popularise pot-composting concept in the city.
Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru on Thursday, Swami Ekagamyananda, who is incharge of ‘Swacchata Abhiyan’, said that three specially designed pots are used to convert the kitchen waste into manure under this concept.
Stating that this method does not require the use of earthworms as in the case of vermi-compost, he said coco peat is used in the pots to convert the kitchen waste into manure. The ‘black soldier flies’ that are produced in the organic wet waste help decompose the waste into manure. He said the wet waste can be converted into manure in 45-60 days.
One of the issues raised by the citizens of Mangaluru during the ‘Swacchata Abhiyan’ period was the lack of proper wet waste handling mechanism in the city. The pot-composting method will help convert the kitchen wet waste into manure at the household-level itself, he said.
