Lashing out at the BJP BJP leaders for observing a fast to protest washout of Budget Session, the Congress said Modi is being silent at a time the country wants him to speak up against corruption, violence against women and farmers’ distress.

The Opposition said the observance of fast by the BJP leadership was a gimmick.

He said the BJP did not allow the House to function and was now observing a fast over it. The Congress has been maintaining that it was the Centre that orchestrated the disruption of the entire session using the AIADMK. The party said the BJP did not want a discussion on issues such as PNB scam, farmers’ distress and the no confidence motion moved by Opposition parties.

Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal said here on Thursday that the slogan by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao had now acquired an entirely new meaning — that of a warning. He was referring to the cases of rape and murder reported from Jammu and Uttar Pradesh. He said violence against women had risen in the last three years and said the BJP-ruled States of Madhya Pradesh, UP and Maharashtra ad reported the highest number of rape cases in the country.

Referring to the incident of rape and murder in Kathua, Jammu, Congress president Rahul Gandhi wondered how can anyone could protect the culprits of such evil. “What happened to Asifa at Kathua is a crime against humanity. It cannot go unpunished. What have we become if we allow politics to interfere with such unimaginable brutality perpetrated on an innocent child?” he tweeted.

Sibal said the Prime Minister did not observe a fast when Nirav Modi, accused in the PNB scam, left the country under his nose. “He did not think of observing a fast when farmers committed suicide, when question papers of CBSE and SSC were leaked out, or when Judge Loya was killed.”
