The Mangalore-based Primacy Industries Ltd, the manufacturer and exporter of scented candles, has now diversified into the production of room fresheners and deo sprays.
V.K. Thalithaya, President of Primacy Industries, said the company had set up an aerosol manufacturing facility in Mangalore. The unit has two production lines and can produce 2.5 million cans a month.
At present, 90 people are working in that unit. An investment of around Rs 2.8 crore has been made on the plant and machinery. The building for the factory has been taken on a long-term rent, he said.
Gautham Pai, Chairman of Primacy Industries, said aerosol production at Mangalore plant is for the markets in the US, Europe and India.
SCENTED CANDLE Thalithaya said the scented candle manufacturing unit in Mangalore, which was gutted in January 2013, has been rebuilt now.
Gautham Pai said the company had planned to stage a comeback within one year after the fire accident. “We emerge stronger when we go through a tough situation like this,” he said.
Thalithaya said the re-built facility has a factory hangar with four production lines. The fifth one is under construction. A warehouse will be built and an office complex will be provided, he said.
Production capacity Asked about the production capacity of the unit, he said one line can produce around 15 tonnes of candles daily.
To a query on the production capacity of the Mangalore unit pre- and post-accident, he said previously the unit was producing around 1,000 containers of candles a year. The re-built unit can produce around 650 containers.
He said the investment was around Rs 11.5 crore when the factory was set up nine-and-a-half years ago. This did not include land cost. The company has invested around Rs 20 crore for rebuilding the unit after the fire accident.
On the safety aspects, he said the major customers of the company have done audit of the rebuilt plant, and have given the highest ratings. Additional water pipelines have been laid all around the plant, and water storage capacity has been increased, he said.
Pai said that the Executive Chairman of Infosys, N.R. Narayana Murthy, will inaugurate the rebuilt plant on January 15. M. Narendra, Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Overseas Bank, will be present on the occasion.
Primacy Industries caters to stores in the US, Europe and the Gulf region. Some of them are Wal Mart, Pier 1, Candle Artisan and Dollar Store.
